This is the entrance to The Perla
Marina Hotel in Nerja where we all stayed. The accomodation,
meals, staff and environment were excellent. We arrived by
plane, bus and car, and gradually got used to the Spanish
schedule during the day. Boy, they really love to party until
the early hours of the morning! |
 |
This is the hotel's balcony, which
literally overlooked the sea and the beach was a few feet
away. You can tell we were really slumming it! (not). Many
found the times of fellowship around tables was great as we
got to know folk from Finland, Sweden, Holland, South Africa,Ireland,
the UK, Spain and the USA. |
 |
Much of our time was given to sharing
our simple church journeys, and experience in our cultural
settings. Time was given to discuss problems faced and needs
and there was prayer, prophecy and words from the Lord. |
 |
It was a real joy to meet and chat
with Gary Bishop and the IMB teams working in Birmingham and
elsewhere. The Church Planting Movements movie that I use
in all our Luke 10 training is produced by the IMB.
I was disappointed that we did not have time to learn of their
work amongst people groups in the UK |
 |
Jeff Gilberston joined us from House2House
and brought some good insights and resources and Felicity's
latest book "An Army of Ordinary People". This is
a snap I took of him relaxing with a drink. It really was
non-alcoholic so I cannot use it against him! |
 |
It was a real joy for me to finally
meet and have some time with Bernard Sanders from the Uk who
is a practitioner of simple church planting, his teams working
in 70 countries. I had several meals and conversations with
Bernard and his friend James from Durban. I did sneak away,
though, to watch England beat Austria one nil to qualify for
the World Cup. |
 |
Much of our real times of sharing
were over meals during the lunch period and "siesta".I
also bumped into Henk Vink from Holland at Malaga Airport
on my way home and we had a good time of sharing over a sandwich.
How amazing that the Lord is showing His people the same things
all over the world! |
 |
As well as the fellowship with God's
people it was also thrilling to share the love of God with
people that we met. I shared God's love with a Spanish Janice
Battersbey look-a-like, a couple from Coventry, a girl from
Derby, and a retired couple from Birmingham. |
If I was summing up, and that is very hard to do as lots was
happening all the time, I would highlight the following:-
- The emphasis needs to be teaching, demonstrating and seeing
the Kingdom of God. This is far bigger than church and
church planting, as Christ brings His Rule into all areas. Our
burden should be to disciple people, reach the "not
yet believers", and work closely with all the Body of
Christ in an area. We are not "placing flags"
and enlarging our "name" but sowing seeds and honouring
God. We should beware idolatry and other works of the
flesh and the devil. Leaders are servants, not controlling
hierachical rulers.
- We need to do as Jesus did, the Father's works in the
power of the Holy Spirit, to see people truly converted to
God, healed and set free from sin and the devil.
Whilst traditional churches may have been "visible"
for a long time, the love of God flowing in God's kingdom
is powerful. If we lift up Jesus He will draw people.
It is a good method, when discovering a need, to volunteer
to pray for that person there and then on the spot if possible.
- Church is Simple and Organic. We need to keep it that
way, allowing Christ to create churches within people groups
rather than "Westernised" clones. We also must avoid
"clergy" "laity" divisions and concepts
and leave unhelpful "clutter" behind us. Jesus
did not say "Do not lead", but He said, "lead
in THIS way..". Church" is a NOUN, Church is not
what we DO but what we ARE. Jesus never once asked us to
build His Church, He said HE would! His commission was not for
us to plant churches, but preach, teach and show His Kingdom
and make disciples, churches are the fruit of us obeying
God. The "church" in the Wilderness is reactionary
and wanders, in the Promised Land God's people are on a journey
of discovery.
- Simple churches and "Networks" need to find Ephesians
four ministries that lay the Foundation, and perfect
God's people for ministry and maturity. Ministries give
"life links" and "ligaments" to the Body.
This enables churches to be healthy, mature and growing which
includes mulitiplying. We do not have a bigger church by
having more in attendance, church is "where two or three
are gathered in Jesus Name" or many more, but it is still
church. The model of New Testament church is Family.
It is relational, some grow up, leave and start their own family.
